Stoke-on-Trent Local Election Candidates Get 500 Words

Pits n Pots is asking for all candidates standing in the Stoke-on-Trent Local Election on May 6 for 500 words about their campaign, the issues that are going to fight and their reasons for standing.

Any submissions from candidates will be published on the site for all voters to read.

Tony Walley, founder of Pits n Pots said, ‘we are contacting as many candidates standing in the local election as we can and asking them to write 500 words about their campaign, their values and what they are standing for. We are then going to publish all the submissions we receive without any editing so the electorate can read the information exactly as it was written by the candidate.

We feel it is important in this local election that we give all candidates the chance to get their manifestos, their issues and their reasons for standing on-line and in front of as many people as possible.’

Tony Continued, ‘by publishing without editing, people will be reading exactly what the candidates want them to read rather than them answering questions that I think people will want to hear the answers to. We hope this will then promote some discussion in each of the wards and we can then ask candidates for interviews where they can answer questions that have been raised on the site based on their 500 words.’

Pits n Pots has tonight sent out the first batch of E-mails asking candidates for their 500 words. The first batch mainly consists of serving councillors as their contact details are easy to find as well as a number of other candidates who we have contact details for.

If you are a candidate in the local election please do get in touch with us so we can get your 500 words on the site.

Have Your Say

  • Chris

Does anyone know if Jamie Naylor (Blurton Candidate)has been contacted to comment.
In my opinion she really as got to be number one contender for this possition and we have seen what power Husband & Wife tag team coucillors can do for this city in the past.
As the son of the Late cllr Derek Hall who stood in Blurton for 10 yrs as the first independant cllr for the ward. I must say it feels great to know such a committed lady such as Jamie might be the one to fill my dads shoes.

Just one point which would be a strange but good feeling, My dad was the first ind cllr for Blurton and if Jamie get the votes she would be the first ever female cllr to serve the ward of Blurton.

Good luck to all candidates especially Jamie

  • Mike Rawlins

Morning Chris, not as yet no, we have contacted everyone we have an E-mail address for so far now we are trying to mop up the rest.

If you have contact details for Jamie mail them in to us and I’ll sort it.

  • Chris

    Hi Mike.

I dont have an email address for jamie but i guess you could send the email via her husband Cllr Roy Naylor (Ind) Blurton ward.

    Hope this helps

  • Nicky Davis

The 500 words is a really great idea.

    Shame the list

    http://www.stoke.gov.uk/ccm/cms-service/stream/asset/?asset_id=2003918

doesn’t include email addresses. It’s desperately old fashioned not to. PnP could always use snail mail to invite the rest in who don’t get in touch but there’s cost to that.

  • Bill Cawley

105 candidates and so far only 8 responses. This is a crucial period for the City and few of the candidates have ventured to give any ideas on how this is to be turned around. See the piece I did earlier on the recession and job losses to give you an idea of the extent of the problem

  • Ian Norris

Bill Cawley, you beat me too it, was just going to post the same.. Only 8 submissions is very poor, and sadly only few out those of those 8 have have given feed back to questions asked to them.

What are the 97 candidates afraid of?

Door to door canvassing is proving difficult for MAIN parties (possible due to regional offices ignoring local members) and pretty impossible for independents with current ward sizes. but internet and sites such as pitsnpots offer excellent communication channels.

While some won’t like the idea of receiving just a leaflet if that leaflet give details of candidates blog or local blogs they can be contact on, then it should make an election campaign far more open.

    So why isn’t it happening?

    Abbey Green.

I got my postal vote through this morning.

Does anyone have any idea who Chris Knight is?

Or in fact any of the candidates – Walker, Sykes, Hassall, Gill or Durkin?

Any views from any of them – I’ve received nothing.

    Alex

  • Nicky Davis

    Alex,

    http://www.stoke.gov.uk/ccm/cms-service/stream/asset/?asset_id=2003918

I guess you could write to them and ask them, but it shouldn’t be that way around! They should be letting you know about themselves and earning your support. Note to candidates – first one to get leaflets out an Abbey Green may get Alex’s vote. I don’t live in Abbey Green myself but I have to say I find it quite astonishing if candidates there have not written to or leafleted postal voters by about this stage. The only thing I can think is you may have got your postal vote early, if you look at timetable on democracy4stoke website:

    http://www.democracy4stoke.co.uk/?page_id=43

it says publication of notice of poll is on Tuesday. So maybe you’ll get something soon.

    Alby Walker:

Mike Durkin via Melanie Baddeley (proposer):

    http://www.moderngov.stoke.gov.uk/mgUserInfo.aspx?UID=1051

Maybe you could get at the others via party websites. Not got a clue about Chris Knight.

But like I say, you shouldn’t have to be chasing them!

  • Leaf Trombone

    sorry – cocke dup.

  • Ian Norris

If anyone has received a leaflet please visit

    http://www.democracyclub.org.uk

and upload a photo or scan of the Leaflet..

Myself in Burlsem North/Stoke North have not received anything for either the local or National Vote, and no 500 words on PnP.

  • Ian Norris

democracyclub.org.uk are also sending a survey to all Candidates to answer so far in Stoke North, only Andrew Large (Con) and John Fisher (lib) have answered the survey.

Check out who has answered in your area, if they cant answer few questions should they get your vote?

  • Ian Norris

Stoke North doing good good NOT 1 candidate in Stoke Central or Stoke South have yet to answer the survey?

if you want to know their view on national and local issues asking them why they have yet to answer survey?

  • Nicky Davis

Trouble with the democracy club leaflets upload idea is they aren’t split into different sections for the parliamentary and local elections. If they had been I might have been motivated to scan some in but with them all mixed in together I think it’s just not as useful.

    In Trentham:

Parliamentary leaflets received so far – 3 from Rob Flello (including one I expect he’ll not mind me mentioning with a hand written note as I wasn’t in when he called round – nice of him really seeing as he’ll know how anti-labour I am, not anti-him just anti-labour), 2 from Zulfiqar Ali, 1 from Mark Breeze.

Local leaflets received so far from Peter Hayward (independent) and Alan Alcock (libdem).

Very interesting that the tories aren’t putting the effort in in ‘tory Trentham’. Does that mean they realise they’ve lost us (well not me personally – they never gained me as I’ve never voted tory) due to the Ibbs&Irving effect, or are they deluded enough to think they can get the tory vote here without trying?

On the democracy club questions generated from the issues we put in, I contributed half the issues for South, all the issues for Central but only a couple of issues for North. Two out of the three questions generated for South I found to have been phrased in such a way that the emphasis wasn’t really what I had intended. The questions generated for Central were pretty good though.

In the end I decided to send my own questions out to SOT South candidates, which I’d thought ages back to do. Time permitting I hope to do a blog on them when I’ve got replies, but there is an emphasis, because they are my questions, on the things I’m most interested in. I only emailed them out today. I don’t have email contact for the ukip guy Mark Barlow (ukip seem to be keeping such a low profile they might as well be down a mine shaft) so just emailed the party. Very prompt and pretty good reply in my opinion from Mike Coleman so far. James Rushton has an automatic reply set up with a commitment to reply within 48 hours.

Local candidates who have not yet done so – please send your 500 words to pitsnpots!

  • Abi Brown

Nicky – we are putting in effort everywhere in Stoke South. Across Trentham & Hanford ward, we put out a Conservative newspaper before Christmas, and a survey introducing our local and parliamentary candidates before Easter as part of our campaign. We take nothing for granted and we’ll fight for every vote.

Get in touch if you have not received any of these.

  • Nicky Davis

Hi Abi, I expect I did get the newspaper. I got and responded to the survey – basically had a good old rant about Roger Ibbs, his attitude and the reluctance of the tories, especially national party, to take this ‘little local’ issue seriously. I’m just thinking about general election and local election leaflets though, none delivered to my house in Trentham from the tories. To be fair I am a waste of your time in terms of votes because the chance of me voting tory is miniscule, but from my general political and blogging interest I like to look at what everyone is offering. James is good on the email though and will be replying to some questions I sent him, so that is good.

    Hi all,

Does anyone have contact details (email) for Alan Alcock and Mark Jonathan Wright (Trentham / Hanford area) Im trying to decide who to vote for but as ive not received ANY leaflets either i have no idea of their policies and cannot find any contact details on internet and have a couple of questions to ask.

    Thanks,

    H.

  • Ian Norris

look forward to your blog if you get any replies?

  • Nicky Davis

I live in Trentham and haven’t heard from Mark Wright.

Had a leaflet from Alan Alcock:

    http://www.pitsnpots.co.uk/blog/2010/04/libdem-propaganda-trentham-hanford

    No email address though.

  • Ian Norris

Nicky: my 1st leaflet hand delievered my Joan Walley, she apologised for them not being delivered yet, sadly she caught me on my day off, in my shorts and was too flustered to ask any question, apart from that Tristham Hunt selection would have a bearing on how i vote.

  • James Rushton

    Hello Nicky
I sent you a response yesterday. Please will you confirm that you have received it.
    Thanks
    James

  • Nicky Davis

Yes James, thank you very much for your interesting responses. I’ve just emailed you back, sorry for the delay. I’m hoping to write a blog on responses at the weekend when I have a bit more time. Hope I may get some other responses. So far it’s just you and Mike Coleman.

  • Leaf Trombone

My mystery is solved – other half’s been binning them…

  • Shaun Bennett

But Nicky, I thought you were voting for Terry Follows???

He may not take the Tory label at the moment but make no mistake, he’s a Tory too you know at heart :-)

  • Nicky Davis

    :) lol Alex!

  • Nicky Davis

Yes he was in the tories, but the difference is he’s not in the party anymore so (a) therefore he is not subject to the party or the whip so in the unlikely event of him winning the election he could be properly representative o people rather than party and (b) he’s a good anti-party protest vote.

  • Guest

How naive. You’re voting for someone you know is not going to win based solely on the fact that he’s not in any party and it’s a protest. Might as well stamp your foot and pout while you’re at it.

All rather pointless, might as well vote BNP, if you’re going to abrogate your electoral responsibilities in that way.

  • Nicky Davis

Yes exactly, that’s one of the problems isn’t it, it is all rather pointless. Stamping our feet, pouting and voting independent or BNP is all we can do in the electoral set up that we have. It’s a bit like a toddler strop I admit, but if you can’t persuade anyone by being nice and using reasonable argument, at least it gets you some sort of attention. If trying to improve things using the system doesn’t work, then resort to protest. Voting for a dictatorial establishment party which is not going to represent my views would be even more irresponsible. At least the protest votes count in the sense of going on record and showing the main parties how cr*p they are. Eventually it may come to the point that they do something about it. Actually, look at the way they, especially labour, get their knickers in a twist about the few people who vote BNP. So you can actually see why some people may want to do that.
