Stoke-on-Trent South MP Fails To Get Sustainable Livestock Bill Through Parliament.

Rob Flello MP for Stoke-on-Trent South has failed in his bid to get his Sustainable Livestock Bill through Parliament.

The bill failed despite having the backing of some 55,000 people and the support of Friends of the Earth.

Mr Flello’s bill would have curbed rainforest destruction and helped to boost UK farming.

Despite 176 MPs pledging their support, delaying tactics employed by a handful opposing the bill, succeeded in putting off the crucial vote until after the majority of the house had left to return to their constituencies for the weekend.

If successful, the new law would have enabled UK farmers to swap imported s animal feed containing soy for home-grown alternatives. Soy grown in plantations in South America is having a devastating impact on rain forestation as well as leaving the home farming market at the mercy of fluctuating prices.

The bill was supported by charities like the RSPB, the National Heart Forum and Compassion in World Farming. It was also backed by a number of the country’s top ten restaurants.

The government have now conceded that the level of support for the bill had raised several important issues. They have agreed to commission a report and to attend a conference to discuss the concerns raised in the bill.

‘Mr Flello’s bill would have curbed rainforest destruction and helped to boost UK farming’

Was it backed by UK farming?

  • Roland

Sounds like a sensible idea to me, how could anyone vote against it unles they have a vested interest in importing soya meal!

Whilst on the subject of agricultureisn’t it time something was done about the £50bn a year spent by the EU subsidising farming?

  • Ian Norris

Who forces UK farmers to buy imported food, can livestock farming ever be sustainable considering the levels of food stock needed to raise the animals

  • mikefire

If a bill of such supposed import cannot be passed, it reflect on the proposer not the bill, but does smack of “,Cutting off your nose etc”

Ian asks a good question, could this country British livestock be sustaned useing only British foodstuff.

  • webby

Yep Ian does as a good question – a radical shake up of UK farming, land use, sustainability needs to be looked at and looked at fast.

Such a shame Rob’s attempt has failed at the first hurdle. We need to be looking at 20/50 years into the future.

If we can’t be sustainable we need to look at the reasons why not. The obvious reason to me is the massive birth rate in this country.

Another thing that needs flagging up is the decline in farming in resent years due to fuel costs, cheap imports from countries such as France and the US (yep it’s cheaper to rear cattle in the US and ship it here than it is to rear cattle here)

  • Roland

Reading between the lines I would think the bill would have entailed a subsidy to British farmers to buy dearer British alternatives to Soya meal, I may be wrong though.

They talk of little else in the pot-banks and factories of Stoke.
I was in the corner shop last night and a group of little old ladies was clearly heard saying:

“Have you heard about the sustainable livestock bill?”
“Yes” came the reply, “I read of little else thesedays.”

I think a petition should be put out calling for mass support of this bill.

Yep, bang on the nail for Stoke.

I think you are right. It was Flello who talked out Newcastle MP Paul Farrellys bill which would have improved workers rights a few years ago, when he wanted to be a pps.

I supposed what comes around goes around.

Its a big shame though, this bill is much needed.

Gary why so parochial, should rob just asked that all city farm food is sourced locally would that have pleased you. This was a good bill held back by childish filly bustering (is that correct term?)

Maybe I’m a little harsh on the chief filibuster of Stoke South who it is alleged) talked out paul Farrely’s attempt at getting equal rights for part time workers. Of Course, it’s only a roumor that they hate each other.

I’d like proof that British Farmers support this bill.
