Consultation for Bus Re-routing in Hanley begins

Public consultation on changes to the bus routing in Hanley appears to have begun.

Although there has been no official public announcement about this from Stoke-on-Trent City Council yet, the web page on the council website appears to have been updated on Monday.

It was proposed at the December Cabinet meeting, that public consultation should take place in January & February 2012, with the detailed design phase taking place between February & April in order for the final proposals to be presented to the April Cabinet meeting.

The consultation covers in-bound and out-bound bus routes for the new John Street bus station as well as substantial changes to the traffic flow on roads in the city centre.

According to the agenda pack for the December Cabinet meeting the public consultation will involve a leaflet drop to every address in and adjacent to the city centre as well as a public exhibition of the proposals.

For such an important topic of the New Bus Station improving public transport and regenerating Hanley, there has been very little debate or reporting on making it work.

Now the Council have a difficult job solving the routes to the New Bus Station due to its access no longer being off Lichfield Street, so options are now limited.

The reduction in car access and on street parking maybe seen as improving the environment with increased pedestrianisation but will the Extra Buses be counter productive to this?

Can Stafford Street cope with 2 way Bus traffic the Bus Stops will have to be well spaced to ensure no bottlenecks with buses unable. and what of the shopping environment? better or worse then at present?

Removing buses from Town Road will make it more difficult to access Hanley Health centre, its already quite a climb, but when you consider the climb from Stafford Street. Removal of bus stops will of course reduce visits to those shops in that area, and no word on if Town Road will be pedestrianised to entice shoppers back.

Should this decisions been discussed earlier in planning stage? But as its what we’ve got I cant think of any alternatives, but think Council may need to consider subsidising a bus service to health centre.

    City Centre Bus Rerouting

Just to let you know that the delay in releasing information on the traffic management changes in the City Centre has been because of the need to confirm the times and venue for the public exhibition and to complete the work on the revised traffic regulation orders. We now expect to be able to deliver leaflets to every address in the City Centre next week and there will be posters around the City Centre for those who don’t live or work there.

The information on the Council’s website here gives the story about what is being proposed and why and we can now confirm that the public exhibition will be held in the East West Centre Offices in Charles Street (opposite the bus station) on
    Tuesday 14 February from 10am to 2pm
Wednesday 15 February from 12 noon to 4pm and Thursday 16 February from 3pm to 7pm
to answer any questions and explain the proposals in more detail.

The Council’s consultation website will have a questionnaire to be completed which will be published next week. We will also be publishing the new traffic regulation orders shortly so that the formal consultation on the legal orders and the consultation on the bus routes and bus stops take place at the same time.

This will be the biggest change to the way the City Centre works in 30 years but we think we have got the balance between the need for new bus routes and bus stops, the public realm and pedestrian improvements, and the management of traffic and parking, about right.

We will be reporting the views of the public on the proposals and any objections to the traffic regulation orders to the City Council’s Cabinet meeting on 26 April with a view to starting construction of the changes in May and having them completed well before the new bus station opens at the end of the year.
