Readers View – Renovate Hanley instead of ripping it down

Hello Stoke-on-Trent City Council, why not look at ideas like this from Manchester for improving Hanley?

Why not ‘renovate’ some of the old buildings rather than pull them down to make way for some concrete and steel monstrosity?

Just a thought.

  1. I agree wholeheartedly with the sentiment here, there are some beautiful buildings in Stoke on Trent, from our heritage as a world class creative manufacturing hub. This scheme in Manchester is part of the NOMA masterplan, and don’t forget that just opposite, the Co-op have built their new Headquarters which is a 21st century ‘glass’ icon. Unless we continue to create and innovate, we will go backwards, and that can’t be the right option for our city. A planning moratorium wouldn’t be a good idea?

  2. The had a planning moratorium developer ‘we want to build a big shopping centre in stoke’ council ‘ok what should we knock down?’

  3. perhaps it’s because the people involved in the regen of Manc or Brum actually live there or come from there and therefore have greater affinity for the area and wish to retain the area’s heritage. That’s not the case in SOT which uses regen companies from Manc, Brum, London etc. Can’t imagine someone from Manc being as concerned about SOT heritage as his own. Can you?

  4. I have seen reports in the local paper where this very thing as been talked of by the council. The area round Tontine Square and the Lloyd’s Bank buildings for one. Looked great in the pics published, very retro 60s.

  5. Some of the older buildings appear to be beyond repair. Don’t you think that by building new buildings and encouraging new tourists and shoppers to the area will do more good for Stoke than holding on the the past?
