City Council to review City Centre night time economy

Stoke-on-Trent City Council Leader Mohammed Pervez has asked for a task and finish group to be set up which will tasked with carrying out what is being call a comprehensive review of the city centre’s night-time economy.

The task and finish group will be made up of a number of city councillors who will work with businesses, visitors and licensees. They will collect information on the current night time economy of the city centre and make recommendations for future improvement. Continue reading →

City Council announce plan to become self-sufficient in low carbon energy

As reported on Pits n Pots 2 weeks ago, Stoke-on-Trent a city self sufficient in low carbon energy?, Stoke-on-Trent City Council yesterday announced that they are one of just six authorities nationwide to make it to the second stage of the ‘Creative Councils’ programme, securing £150,000. The funding will help the council create a trail-blazing local authority power company which will help the city become self-sufficient in low carbon energy – a first under the 2011 Localism Act. Eye Spy the By-election

So the by-election has finally been called for the vacancy for Office of Councillor for the Springfields and Trent Vale ward, it’s only taken since 27 April. So now the ballot boxes are being broken out and just in the nick of time… frustrated residents in Springfields & Trent Vale are already starting to petition the council over local issues, having begun to feel the effects of no local representation for the last few months.

Despite having more councillors than they know what to do with, Labour have not fallen over themselves to ensure residents have felt looked after, which is perhaps why there are rumblings that this by-election may see upwards of 8 candidates all vying to fix the numerous potholes and clear the litter on the yellow brick road from Trent Vale to Stoke. Hardly a ringing endorsement of previous incumbents…

Is the Civic Centre to move to the Central Business District in Hanley?

Plans are set to go before the Cabinet next week that will see the Stoke-on-Trent City Council become the anchor tenant for the new Central Business District in Hanley.

The move away from the Civic Centre in Stoke could be the beginning of the end for this struggling town. It is widely thought that it is only council staff doing their shopping and buying lunches in Stoke that keeps the remaining shops open. Continue reading →

The big news this week, as hinted in my last column, was the resignation of Deputy Lord Mayor Khan as he prepares to once again face the Standards Committee. This is certainly an honourable decision, however why it took so long (and a Labour group meeting) to convince Khan to resign perhaps signifies how unaware certain councillors are about what the public think of their conduct. Residents urged to claim their free tickets for Stoke-on-Trent Olympic celebration

Only 2,000 tickets remain for the Olympic Torch Relay Evening Celebration in Hanley Park on Wednesday May 30 in what is set to be the city’s biggest ever stage show.

Last month 6,000 tickets went up for grabs for the city’s Olympic Torch Relay Evening Celebration, now only 2,000 tickets remain available and residents are being urged to act fast to avoid disappointment. Continue reading →

Those who thought all out elections would bring some stability to our Council must be feeling embarrassed this week as Council Leader Mohammed Pervez took a scalpel to his cabinet, cutting out the disobedient Gratton and challenger Hill, and carving up the other portfolios in what is quite clearly more than the ‘tweaking’ he described it as.

The introduction of Platt and Dutton is seen as a nod to the left wingers in the group, who re-emerged in 2011 to rival the modernisers who were in danger of taking over Labour. Continue reading →

Tickets go on sale for Stoke-on-Trent Olympic Torch celebrations

2012 Olympic Torch Relay 6000 tickets have been released for the Stoke-on-Trent Olympic Torch celebrations at Hanley Park on May 30th and Stoke-on-Trent residents are being urged to get their tickets for this once in a lifetime event.

Tickets have been made available through Ticketmaster’s website allowing people the first chance to get their hands on tickets for the live music and stage show set for Hanley Park.

You can book your tickets on a first come first served basis from 9AM this morning using the Ticketmaster link at the foot of the page. While tickets are free of charge there will be a nominal booking fee to cover postage. Continue reading →
